Lesotho Blog 2025, Day 18 - Visiting An AIDS Clinic

Hey everyone, back at home. Hope everyone is having a good summer so far! I miss you all so much! Today was an early morning we all woke up around 6 to make it to breakfast by 6:30. After breakfast we headed to Baylor Pediatric AIDS clinic.

We started off by getting a tour of the facility which is very nice! They had us set down our stuff in the conference room and we hung out for a little while one of the main ladies found assignments for us. They broke us up into little groups and some of us on our own but paired up with a RN of course. Hannah and Kylah were sent to the triage same with Natalie and Jayla. Mack was sent to the TB screenings. Emily was sent to the oncology screenings. Maddy was paired up with one of the doctors and got to see lots of kiddos. I was sent to the research TB testing. I was paired with a nurse midwife she explained to me that they are doing research on trying to find new ways to test for TB. She walked me through the process of the screenings, the consent process and then the actual testing. She told me they start in the front and do a basic screening just answering questions then if they are either referred or want to be a part of the stuffy they come back into the room for further examination. They start by asking a few questions going over the informed consent then they take vitals and if the nurse thinks they need it the patient will get shuttled in a car to the hospital to get a chest X-ray (This is because they do not have an X-ray machine on site). After the X-ray they come back to Baylor to get the X-ray read by the doctor and they get their blood drawn and as well as some new testing ways one of which was they wear an KN-95 mask for 30 that has a PDA strip in it. After those are sent to the lab for further testing. I also learned today that the Intradermal vaccine they are given for TB when they are born leaves a scar. Some of the kids switched medical books so their vaccine records are not there so the nurse would check for the vaccines by looking for the scar. I thought that was really cool. We took a little break for lunch then headed back to Baylor to watch a  presentation on all the amazing things they do here in Lesotho. We left around 4 then Emily, Mack, Maddy and I went on a run and did a little core workout after! It was a beautiful day! I hope everyone is doing well at home love and miss you all! See you soon.

Hi everyone at home reading!

I miss you all so much! Today was a busy day but I learned so much! We got up bright and early at 6 am and had a yummy breakfast at 6:30 before heading to the Baylor Pediatrics Aids Clinic at 7:15. We spent all morning there, everyone was sent to different departments and worked with different doctors, nurses, psychologist, oncology, and in the testing labs. I was with one of the doctors in the exam rooms. She was very nice and taught me so much and answered all of my questions. She taught me how their computer charting systems work and what she writes in their books. She even let me write in their books once I watched her a couple times. We also had a kiddo who came in with a cough, so she let me listen to their lungs. We saw probably about 15 patients in the 2.5 hours I was with her. We headed back for lunch around 1 and we all chatted in the van about all the different things we learned in the morning. Once we got back, we had a delicious lunch and chilled for a little bit before heading back to the Baylor Pediatrics Aid Clinic. We were there for about 2 hours in the afternoon and we just received a presentation from the head nurse who was so sweet and taught us so much! She taught us all about the different programs they have and are trying to continue and start here in Lesotho it was very interesting! We left at about 4 and headed back. Sofia, Mack, Emily, and I went on a 2 mile run and did some core before getting ready for dinner and just hanging out the rest of the night! Love and miss you all at home! See you so soon!

Looking at the same stars
